What does a Business Analyst do?

Business Analyst interacts with the business to identify goals, areas of improvement, or any other pain points the stakeholder maybe experiencing.  Business Analyst will then write down the requirements and communicate them directly to the IT team or a solutions developer and deliver the solutions to the business. Such solutions may include: 

  • Adding new features to the existing software or changing an existing one.
  • Gathering the requirements for a brand new mobile app and working with the product team to deliver the app to the customer.
  • Communicating issues such as software bugs to the developer and get them resolved. 
  •  Improving current process or any other future IT systems.

The IT business analyst role is often seen as a communication bridge between IT and the business stakeholders. Business analysts must be great verbal and written communicators, problem solvers, and creative thinkers. BA’s should have the ability to engage with stakeholders to understand and respond to their needs in rapidly changing business environments.

The work of a business analyst is very closely related to the IT sector, and in some companies business analysts may be considered a technical job role and sit within an IT department. The IT team typically includes BA’s, developers, UI/UX designers, testers, devOps, project managers, product managers, subject matter experts (SME). This varies company by company.

  • Customer & Product focused. Performs competition analysis, market research, trends, product strategy, and feature prioritization. 
  • Owns product vision, manages product backlog & creates product roadmap.

  • Focus is more on bringing a competitive product to the market quickly than spending time on creating heavy documentation. 
  • Has a good understanding of Agile methodologies such as Agile Kanban & Scrum.

  • Project focused.  BA is a bridge between the business and the product team.
  • Gathers the requirements from the stakeholders and creates documents such as Business Requirements Document (BRD), wireframes, or UML diagrams. 
  • Business Analyst will break down the requirements and input the tasks in a product management software. The Product Owner or Product Manager usually carries the product overall vision. 
  • Follows Waterfall methodology principles. (As of 2020, BA’s are required to know Agile methodologies as well).
